Commonsense Set Theory
It is argued that set theory provides a powerful addition to commonsense reasoning, facilitating expression of meta-knowledge, names, and self-reference. Difficulties in establishing a suitable language to include sets for such purposes are discussed, as well as what appear to be promising solutions. Ackermann’s set theory as well as a more recent theory involving universal sets are discussed i...
متن کاملHYPERSOLVER: A Graphical Tool for Commonsense Set Theory
This paper investigates an alternative set theory (due to Peter Aczel) called Hyperset Theory. Aczel uses a graphical representation for sets and thereby allows the representation of non-well-founded sets. A program, called HYPERSOLVER, which can solve systems of equations deened in terms of sets in the universe of this new theory is presented. This may be a useful tool for commonsense reasoning.
متن کاملIssues in Commonsense Reasoning and Rationality
The notions of common sense and rationality are integral parts of 'folk psychology.' We have no trouble saying " That's a matter of common sense, " " That person just doesn't have a lot of common sense, " or " That seems completely irrational to me. " If we turn to Webster's Dictionary (1981) as a source for folk psychology definitions, we find that common sense is " sound and prudent but often...
متن کاملRelative set theory: Some external issues
The paper establishes equivalence of two axiomatizations of the relative set theory GRIST, examines dependence of nonstandard concepts on the choice of the level, and proves that several nonstandard definitions of Lebesgue measure are equivalent. The last section extends GRIST to a theory of external sets. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification 26E35 (primary); 03E70, 03H05, 28E05 (secondary)
متن کاملCommonsense reasoning, commonsense knowledge, and the SP theory of intelligence
This paper describes how the SP theory of intelligence, outlined in an Appendix, may throw light on aspects of commonsense reasoning (CSR) and commonsense knowledge (CSK) (together shortened to CSRK), as discussed in another paper by Ernest Davis and Gary Marcus (DM). The SP system has the generality needed for CSRK: Turing equivalence; the generality of information compression as the foundatio...
